Points are awarded at the top of each categorised climb. Its leader wears the polka-dot jersey.
Every listed climb awards points to the first riders over the top. The harder the climb (see its category), the more it is worth, and a summit finish often doubles the points on offer.
It is known as the "KOM" (King of the Mountains). The Tour de France's white jersey with red dots rewards the best climber; the Vuelta uses a blue jersey with white dots.
